At first we gasp
At Jesus’ gruff response
To a plea for help;
We gasp and shudder.
In our second breath
May we find companionship.
For Jesus
The pioneer and perfecter of our faith,
Our model and guide
Wrestled with many of the same challenges we do.
Jesus modeled what it means to learn–
To let go of old perceptions
And to be opened.
Opened by another
Opened by an outsider
Opened by the Spirit.
Open us today
Holy One,
That we
Too might surrender
Words and ways
That no longer work.
Open us
To really seeing
The success and struggles
Of our family
Our friends
And our foes.
Release our need for competition
That we might celebrate the others’ victories.
Open us.
