I threw out a sole today–
Size 11 Wide.
It was nestled among the tree detritus
in the flower bed by the street.
I spent my last spring Saturday afternoon
cleaning up from winter’s wrath.
While I uncovered the tentative hosta leaves,
I discovered a sole.
I assume of a man.
I can’t help but wonder
who he is
and how he lost it.
Perhaps he didn’t notice it
fell off on his walk home from the pub down the street.
Or maybe he and his lover had a spat
and his sole was a small price
for walking away before losing his pride.
Whatever the story,
I found a sole and buried it
in five bags of lawn compost.
